3-4 May 2016, Barcelona: WMF 2016 Announced!

“From Global Challenges to Grand Manufacturing Opportunities: Leading towards Growth and Sustainability”

The next edition of the World Manufacturing Forum will be held 3-4 May, 2016 in Barcelona Spain. Along with IMS, this year’s event will be hosted by FundacioCIM, Politecnico Milano, and INESCTEC. The WMF website was updated to reflect this announcement, and will be updated in the coming months with new information.

The following are brief summaries of the planned program. For complete session descriptions, visit the WMF website.

Session 1: “21st CENTURY MANUFACTURING ”

Key trends that may define manufacturing competition over the next 20 years and might require the attention and collaboration of policy-makers, society and business leaders.

Session 2: “MANUFACTURING INVESTMENT: A BRIDGE TO ECONOMIC GROWTH”

Explores how central banks, financial institutions or governmental bodies managing public funds for the manufacturing industry are responding, how manufacturers can take advantage of such programs, and identify gaps where help is still needed.

Session 3: “SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL? ”

Reveals best practices of SMEs engaged in Global Manufacturing Value Chains and explore current and future enablers and obstacles related with their business performance and expansion in international markets

Session 4: “MANUFACTURING INTELLIGENCE ”

With the increasing complexity and sophistication of in-process data collection, the shop floor information collected is trending towards expansion without limits. The session explores how to extract and use large data for achieving intelligent decision-making and liquid enterprises.

Session 5: “SOCIAL INNOVATION AND MANUFACTURING ”

Explores how manufacturing can play a relevant role in conceiving novel products, services, models to meet societal needs, rethinking jobs and relationships within the factories, and establishing extended collaboration networks.

Session 6: “ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES FOR METROPOLITAN MANUFACTURING ”

Population the world over is migrating back to cities, and more than half of the global population already lives in urban areas and the number of mega-cities (more than 10 million inhabitants) is predicted to increase globally in the following years. How will manufacturing adapt to this mega-trend?

Session 7: “ENHANCING THE MANUFACTURING BASE IN EMERGING ECONOMIES”

Explores how knowledge- and technology-intensive activities such as conducting R&D may be overwhelmingly daunting for manufacturers who undertake basic manufacturing in developing countries.

Session 8: “CIRCULAR MANUFACTURING ”

Explores the next manufacturing evolution from ‘take, make, and dispose’ to the circular economy that aims to eliminate waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems and business models, improving the reuse of products and the recycling of materials.

Session 9: “DISRUPTIVE STRATEGIES TOWARDS THE NEXT MANUFACTURING ERA”

The primary impetus in all manufacturing companies is to reinforce the manufacturing competitiveness by fostering differentiation and continuously improve operational efficiency.  Current trends such as the increased rate of technological change, market globalization, customization needs and social and environmental sustainability requirements are considered key drivers for the future of manufacturing. The session will discuss modern manufacturing challenges and will explore new manufacturing paradigms and strategies able to promote future sustainability and competitiveness in the global market.
